Fort St James Travel Guide
Welcome to Fort St James, BC!
Established in 1806 by European explorer Simon Fraser, Fort St. James originally acted as a fur-trading outpost, but today is a hub of business activity for British Columbia’s forestry industry as well as a desirable base camp for eco-tourists. Regardless of the time of year, visitors to the town can enjoy outdoor activities such as fishing or water-skiing in the nearby waters of Stuart Lake, Sustut River or Rubyrock Lake, snowshoeing through Mount Pope Provincial Park or skiing on trails found at Murray Ridge Skill Hill.
Travellers to Fort St. James will also find a number of landmarks that celebrate the town’s connection to Canada’s past. The Fort St. James National Historic Site features buildings originally constructed in the late 1800s and are a lasting reminder of the town’s roots as a vibrant trading post. The burial site of Carrier Chief Kwah is a testament to the town’s lasting relationship with the Carrier First Nations. Also found in town is Our Lady of Good Hope Church, which has welcomed parishioners since its erection in 1873.
